S. Ross Browne studied at the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Visual Art, in Richmond, VA, and Photography at The Corcoran School of the Arts in Washington, DC. He is also an alumnus of The Miller School of Albemarle. Browne is a professional studio artist with over 27 years of experience. With an emphasis on painting, he has exhibited domestically and internationally in over 70 gallery and museum exhibitions including the permanent collection of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, The Valentine Museum, Virginia Commonwealth University, and The Black History Museum of Virginia. He is an awardee of various fellowships and grants, most recently from the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and the Gottlieb Foundation. Media credits include GSN’s Skin Wars Fresh Paint now on Netflix, VPM/NPR, Wine and Country Life Magazine, MSNBC’s The Griot, The Huffington Post, The Washingtonian, Ebony, Richmond Times-Dispatch, Richmond Free Press, The Washington Post, The International Review of African and African American Art, Grid Magazine, WTVR/CBS, Harlem Interviews, Urban Views Magazine, Tom Joyner Foundation, and PBS.
As an educator, Ross was the Art Specialist for the VCU Health System practicing therapeutic art instruction with an emphasis on pediatric hematology/oncology, infectious disease, brain injury, and eldercare. He was also an art educator for various support groups including Living Well for pediatric cancer support and the Richmond Brain Tumor Support Group. Browne was also an instructor for the Resident Associate Program at The Smithsonian Institute in Washington, DC and has taught art and design for inner-city and at-risk youth for the Fresh Air Fund of New York City, Weed and Seed, Project Ready and Art 180 of Richmond as well as an artist in residence for the Anna Julia Cooper School.
He has adjudicated for the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers: Scholastic Art Awards, The National ACT-SO Competition, and The Miller School of Albemarle Spring Honors Exhibition. Browne has also been engaged as a public speaker for the College of William and Mary, the University of Richmond, Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, Henrico, and Varina Public School as well as the Afrikana Independent Film Festival.
In his role as an illustrator, His clients include MacMillan Publishing, The McDonald’s Corporation, The ACLU of Northern California, the City of Richmond, Pulp Literature Press of Canada, Jacaranda Books of London and the University of Virginia Press.
Most recently he has produced murals for several private and public clients including the City of Newport News VA/Boys and Girls Club of America, The St. Francis Home, The Daily Planet, Schneider Laboratories, and Woodberry Forest School. S. Ross Browne was also a participating artist in the inaugural Mending Walls mural movement of Richmond VA.
