From Indiana limestone, Dale Enochs creates sculptures befitting the standard of what is considered the finest limestone in the world. He often combines metal with his limestone work, or he creates stand-alone metal sculptures depending on the needs of a project. That his pieces are in collections as far-reaching as the Zhejiang Foreign Affairs Department, Hangzhou, China, and the private collections of Sir Paul McCartney is a testament to his ability to move vision into reality in such unforgiving mediums.
Enochs’ accolades include teaching assignments at six colleges and universities and more than eighteen awards. His pieces range from a monumental creation weighing 37 tons and a 125-foot-long composition of incised limestone to residential furnishings and small table elements.
Works by this artist may be found in prominent public and private collections. Since 2015 alone, Enochs has been commissioned to create monumental sculptures for the Monroe County Courthouse (Bloomington, IN), Longs Peak (Westminster, CO), Bicentennial Plaza for the Indiana State House (Indianapolis, IN), Indianapolis, the Emens Center in Muncie Indiana and a permanent installation at the Fort Wayne Museum of Art. In 2016, he was selected as one of the 200 top artists in Indiana’s history and created a piece for the Indiana State Museum’s Bicentennial exhibit.
Artist Statement
I work as an independent artist. Thus far, I have successfully completed over 30 public art commissions. My work is in private, public, corporate and museum collections in the United States, Canada, the UK, Japan, and China.
Every public piece that I make is created specifically for a given site. The approach that I take to develop a composition for public work begins with listening carefully to the desires of the client and understanding the context of the proposed environment. I study the location for the work as well as architectural drawings of the area. I take into account the surrounding architecture and landscape, how the space will be used and the eventual pedestrian traffic. I also study the history of the project area and the nearby community. Overall, my intent is to create a cohesive statement with a dynamic visual composition that addresses a project and its relationship to its environment.
Ultimately I believe that art has the power to address people on many levels. Art has the potential to bring diverse images and ideas together, making them whole. Art also has the potential to bring people together and speak of their shared ideals. These challenges are at the heart of what motivates the work that I do.
