Artist & Client Questions Answered
What is Monochronicle and how does it work?
Monochronicle is a curated public art platform and consulting service that connects artists with commissions, helps cities and developers manage public art projects, and offers a marketplace for ready-to-install artworks and proposals.
For artists, it provides access to open calls, portfolio visibility, and optional support with proposals, sales, or production.
For art administrators, it offers AI-enhanced tools to streamline artist selection and reduce bias, plus expert consulting for planning and implementation.
For clients and developers, Monochronicle manages everything from artist curation to contracts, logistics, and fabrication partnerships.
You can use Monochronicle to discover talent, submit artwork, or launch your next public art project, with or without a subscription or account.
Do I need to register or log in to use the platform?
Registration is not required to explore the platform or apply to any open calls; artists can submit directly without needing an account.
However, if you are part of our curated artist network and would like to update your public profile, please contact us at monochronicle.team@gmail.com. We can either provide you with login credentials or update your page on your behalf to save time.
To ensure your portfolio accurately reflects your current practice, we may occasionally request updated files or information that showcases your latest work, capabilities, or areas of focus.
This helps us maintain a professional and relevant platform for both artists and potential clients.
Who can apply to open calls?
Any artist can apply to open calls listed on Monochronicle, regardless of whether they are a registered user. Some projects may have eligibility requirements such as geographic location, discipline, or experience level – those details will always be clearly stated in the listing in the “Eligibility” section.
Can Monochronicle help us curate a project or public art plan?
Yes. We offer consulting services for municipalities, developers, and institutions, ranging from artist selection and community engagement to concept development and implementation. We also provide AI-enhanced tools and artist rosters to streamline the process and reduce bias.
What types of projects do you support?
Monochronicle supports a wide range of projects, including murals, sculptures, digital media, immersive installations, video walls, projection mapping, and full-scale festivals. Whether you’re commissioning a single piece or planning a district-wide activation, we tailor our services to fit.
How many artists are on Monochronicle?
While artist registration is not required to apply to open calls on Monochronicle, the platform actively reaches and engages a broad international network. Over the past five years, we’ve built direct relationships with more than 3,000 artists across disciplines—including muralists, sculptors, digital artists, and immersive designers.
Thanks to our streamlined, user-friendly application process and targeted outreach efforts (such as curated invitations and boosted promotions), artist engagement continues to grow rapidly.
Importantly, we carefully vet each artist before they are featured or recommended through our platform. This includes reviewing portfolios, conducting independent research, and in some cases, personal interviews. We reserve the right to decline any application that does not meet our standards of professionalism, artistic merit, or project fit.
For art administrators and private clients, this ensures access to a diverse but curated pool of qualified, high-caliber talent for every commission.
Where can I view artist portfolios?
Currently, featured artist profiles are accessible only to approved art administrators and clients who are using the platform to commission or curate work.
However, each artist’s profile is also optimized for search engines and can be found by name via Google. If you are a featured artist, you’re welcome to share your personal link with clients, collaborators, or use it as a professional portfolio page for other projects. To become a featured artist, apply here: https://monochronicle.com/join-the-network/
Artist profiles can include images, one embedded video (YouTube or Vimeo), a biography, location, specialties, and more. Art administrators may also leave reviews, which further enhance visibility and credibility.
This approach allows us to maintain a level of curation and privacy for our clients while giving artists a professional presence they can promote independently.
Can you help me with sales?
Yes. If you are a featured artist, you may submit available artworks, concepts, or even previously rejected project proposals for inclusion on our curated marketplace. All listings are reviewed for quality and relevance. We take a 20% commission from direct sales, and 50% if full production support is required. Additionally, we may recommend featured artists to private clients.
How does Monochronicle work with artists?
Most projects on Monochronicle are commissioned by government agencies, municipalities, developers, or private organizations. Each has its own set of requirements—typically including images of past work, a resume, a cover letter, and professional references.
The artist application process is always free. We also provide art administrators with scoring software that ensures fair, efficient evaluation of submissions based on their specific criteria.
In addition to responding to open calls, featured artists may also list available artworks and previously rejected proposals on our curated marketplace: monochronicle.com/search-artwork. If approved and sold, Monochronicle retains a 20% commission. For more complex projects that require our involvement in production, financial transactions, or project administration, the net income is typically split 50/50.
This flexible structure allows us to support both commissioned and independent artist opportunities while maintaining high standards and transparency for all parties involved.
Does Monochronicle take a commission or fee?
Please see the previous question for details on artist commissions and marketplace sales.
In general, Monochronicle does not charge artists to apply or be featured. Instead, we generate revenue through a combination of client-side fees (for open call listings, curation, and consulting) and optional artist services.
When artists request our full project support, including client communication, contract negotiation, logistics, hospitality, equipment rental, materials sourcing, liability insurance, and payment processing, we act as a producer. In these cases, we typically split the net income 50/50 with the artist.
We also offer à la carte services such as grant writing, proposal development, and consulting for both artists and administrators. These are priced separately and tailored to each project’s scope.
How do artists get paid for projects?
In most cases, artists are paid directly by the clients commissioning the work. This keeps the process transparent and efficient.
However, if Monochronicle is acting as a producer or intermediary – handling contracts, logistics, insurance, or other aspects of project management – we may process payments on behalf of the artist. In such cases, terms and fees are discussed and agreed upon in advance.
This flexible approach allows us to support both independent artist-client relationships and more complex, full-service projects where our involvement adds value and structure.
Who manages communication after artist selection?
In most cases, once a client (such as a municipality or private developer) selects an artist, communication continues directly between the two parties. Monochronicle provides the platform and software to facilitate the selection process, but we are not always involved in post-selection communications, contract negotiations, or project updates.
However, some clients request that Monochronicle manage communications on their behalf. In these cases, we act as a liaison to coordinate updates, logistics, and timelines.
Regardless of the setup, we aim to keep artists informed and supported. If you have questions about platform functionality or need clarification, feel free to contact us through the form on our website, and we’ll assist or connect you with the appropriate party.
How does Monochronicle use AI in artist selection?
Our AI tools are designed to assist – not replace – human decision-making. The system helps streamline the review process by generating summaries and identifying relevant information from artist submissions. These summaries serve as a reference for jurors and selection panels but do not influence or make any final decisions.
All evaluations and selections are conducted by a panel of experienced human reviewers. Our use of AI aligns with ethical guidelines and data privacy standards, and is intended to support fairness, reduce bias, and ensure every submission receives thoughtful consideration.
If you have questions, concerns, or encounter technical issues while applying, please contact us at monochronicle.team@gmail.com we’re here to help.
Does Monochronicle fabricate artworks?
Monochronicle is not a fabrication studio, but we work closely with trusted local and national fabrication partners to support the production of custom artworks. If you’re looking to collaborate or need fabrication support for a project, feel free to contact us; we’re happy to connect you with the right team.
While we don’t fabricate third-party artworks ourselves, the Monochronicle team does act as a creative producer for immersive installations, light-based experiences, and public art festivals. In these cases, we serve as both the artistic team and project lead, handling concept development through to final execution.
What if I need help writing a proposal or grant?
We offer consulting services to help artists and clients develop proposals, grants, and presentations. This includes strategy, writing, and visual asset support. Pricing is based on the scope of work and urgency. See some of our services here or contact us to request a quote.
How do I stay informed about new opportunities?
You can follow us on Instagram or subscribe to our newsletter (see the form in the footer) for updates. Featured artists may also receive direct invitations to apply for select projects that match their profile.
