I create bold, colorful, dynamic work that enlivens spaces.
It was a tree branch in the fog that caused me to purchase a camera in 1986. My camera skills were immediately apparent. While working as a manufacturing engineer, a chance mention about doing a bit of photography led to my career expansion, and then to furthering my wanderlust adventures. After four years of photographing the people and events at Silicon Graphics Computer Systems, a call from Moscow preceded the train trip from there to China and the rest of Asia, where I honed my craft. Returning a year later, encouraged by the images resulting from my travels, I embarked on a new career.
Not content to take photography as it was, I began to push the envelope, where advances in film technology allowed me to photograph scenes by moonlight (Moonlight Images), with stunning results. Describing what I was doing, I wrote, "Over time, I create in the camera things that you can't see." I also created in-camera abstractions using a tripod, lights, and time (Shadows and Light), and with freeform techniques (Swirl Series).
When the digital technology arrived, it didn't make sense for photography to remain stuck in the 19th century, considering the tools that were now available. Given my interest in being on the (b)leading edge, that pioneering spirit began to bend the tools to suit my needs. Using an inkjet printer as a paintbrush, I create watercolor-like imagery without Photoshop or filters (Slurry Series). Disruptive in nature, these Slurry Series works don't follow the traditional model of making precise reproductions of an original photograph. Only the essence remains after the printed work evolves over a period of months. Taking that one step further, I make animations of the images as they evolve. https://vimeo.com/jeffmbecker/videos The work has been shown in juried shows at the Housatonic Museum of Art, the Schelfhaudt Gallery at the University of Bridgeport, and in both the Art of the North East and Spectra shows at The Silvermine Guild. The work was also represented at the Art Silicon Valley/San Francisco (Art SV/SF), Art Miamiʼs inaugural International Contemporary and Modern Art Fair on the West Coast, and at odettagallery.com as part NYC’s Creative Tech Week www.ctw.nyc.
Continuing with work that has an underlying social/environmental/political nature, I created the series Fire and Oil, with the initial image becoming a part of the public art collection at Central Connecticut State University. Pieces from this series have been shown in Miami, at the Aqua Miami Art Fair, and will head to Venice, Italy in the late summer of 2026.
